Indian currency coins: The Government of India issues coins along with currency notes every year. However, the exact figure of how many coins the government issues each year is not available. Currently, coins of 50 paise, one rupee, two rupees, five rupees, 10 rupees and 20 rupees are being issued in the country.
The coins in the country are produced by the Government of India. Their minting takes place in four mints. These are: Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Noida. Each coin has a special mark. You can tell from looking at any coin where that coin was made. This means that it can be identified which of the four mints, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Noida, the coin was made in.
However, there is no difference in coins of the same value and size. Their value, purchasing power, weight, face, and reverse side are all the same. But, if you observe closely, there will be a special mark that will indicate where that coin was made.
Every coin has a special mark that is generally overlooked. Below the part of the coin where the year of minting is written, there is a small mark. This mark indicates which mint the coin was made in. For example, if a coin has a diamond mark, it was made at the Mumbai mint. Similarly, if there is no mark on the coin, it would have been made at the Kolkata mint. If a coin has a star mark, it would have been made in Hyderabad.
Which mark indicates which mint: Coins made in Mumbai have a cut diamond or the letter B or M inscribed. Coins made in Hyderabad have a star mark inscribed. Coins made in Noida have a simple dot mark. Coins made in Kolkata do not have any marks.
Diamond Mark: Coins that have a diamond mark are minted in the Mumbai mint. This mark is located just below the year of its manufacture inscribed on the coin. Several coins also have a mark of B, which stands for (Bombay), whereas since 1996, M (Mumbai) has been inscribed on them.
Star Mark: Coins with a star mark are minted in the Hyderabad mint. The star mark on the coins from the Hyderabad mint is located below the date.
Dot Mark: Some coins have a dot mark. This means that these coins are made in Noida. The Noida mint is the newest among all four mints.
No Mark: If a coin does not have any kind of mark, it means that this coin was made in Kolkata. Coins minted in the Kolkata mint do not have any marks. This mint is also the oldest mint in India.
