Viral Video Shows Trichy Cop Demanding Free Groundnuts From Street Vendor; Suspended

A Tamil Nadu police officer was suspended after a video of him asking a street vendor for a free packet of groundnuts in Trichy, went viral on social media.

Trichy Viral Video: Asking a street vendor for a free packet of groundnuts landed a Tamil Nadu police officer in hot water as his actions were captured on camera and the video went viral on social media, resulting in his suspension.

In the viral video, the accused cop, Special Sub-Inspector Radhakrishnan, is seen demanding a packet of groundnuts for free from a street vendor in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy district.

The police officer can also be heard arguing with the vendor who is refusing to indulge him.

“I came here from the Srirangam Police Station, and we waited here for half-an-hour. I am merely asking for some groundnuts. Couldn’t you give me some groundnuts?. I have been (posted) here for the last two years. You won’t survive if you keep this up,” SI Radhakrishnan is heard saying in the video.

According to reports, the incident took place on June 1 when the policeman approached the street vendor and asked for a packet of groundnuts. When asked to pay, the officer replied he was posted at the local police station and left without paying.

The streetside shop which sells nuts and other eatables near Srirangam Rajagopuram in Trichy, belongs to a man named Rajan, reports said, adding that on the day of the of incident, Rajan’s son Sam was handling the shop.

Following the incident, Rajan later approached the Trichy Superintendent of Police and filed a complaint against Radhakrishnan. In his complaint, Rajan alleged that the officer came back to his shop along with two other cops, and threatened the father-son duo, warning him that his son ‘would not survive’ if he kept acting in such a manner.

Rajan also alleged that SI Radhakrishnan threatened to shut his shop down.

Meanwhile, after the video of the incident went viral on social media, the state Police department took cognizance and suspended Radhakrishnan, pending further inquiry.
