
Pope Francis breathed his last on Easter Monday at the age of 88 after battling various ailments, the Vatican said. He was the leader of 1.4 billion Catholics across the globe since March 2013. According to reports, he had spent 38 days in treatment for double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. He had gradually recovered and left the facility on March 23. He passed away a day after he pleased the worshippers at the Vatican on Easter Sunday by making an appearance on the balcony at Saint Peter’s Basilica.
As the real-life process of the papal conclave starts in the next 20 days, the Oscar-winning film Conclave has found fresh significance. Directed by Edward Berger, the 2024 drama revolves around the events that unfold within the conclave aftera pope dies.
Conclave is a 2024 political thriller film which has been directed by Edward Berger and written by Peter Straughan. Based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris, Conclave features Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini in key roles. In the film, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (played by Ralph Fiennes) organises a conclave to elect the next pope.

Conclave had initially debuted on Peacock but has since moved platforms due to Universal’s deal with Amazon. It will start streaming on Prime Video from midnight (ET) on 22 April. If you have Amazon Prime subscription, you can watch for free. Others have the option to sign up for a free 30-day trial to stream the film. Interestingly, it is also available to rent for $5.99 or purchase on several services including YouTube, Apple TV, Google Play and Fandango At Home.
Edward Berger’s papal drama Conclave had won Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture award at the 31st annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. At BAFTA Film Awards 2025, Conclave had four big wins including Best Film, Best Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing.
