Not Bigg Boss or Naagin, THIS is India’s most watched TV show, over 65 crore viewers, it ruined many…
THIS show ruled Indian television with 65 crore viewers and had a TRP of 77. THIS show surpassed Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Naagin and Bigg Boss more shows ratings.
Television shows have managed to rule millions of hearts with their storyline and plot. Television serials arrived in India much later in the West. As per reports, the US and UK were airing shows in 1950, while in India the TV shows did not gain popularity until the late 1970s and 1980s. If reports are to be believed then, the mid-80s to mid-2000s is known as the golden period of Indian television as most of the shows registered record viewership numbers.
Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan is still remembered as the most-watched Indian television show for three decades. The show aired on Doordarshan from January 1987 to July 1988. As per BBC, the show was reportedly watched by 650 million (65 crore) people during its initial run and re-runs. Ramayana became one of the most-watched shows in the world. The episode on Meghnad and Lakshman’s battle gained 77 million impressions (7.7 crore views). Mahabharat’s TRP was around 10-12, while Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi had a rating of around 22.4. Smriti Irani’s show was the only Indian show from the 21st century in the top 5.
Ramayan’s spinoff, Luv Kush’s finale of the show was around 67.1 and it aired in 89. Ramayan featured Arun Govil as Ram, Dipika Chikhalia as Sita, and Sunil Lahri as Lakshman. Arvind Trivedi, a known name, was cast as Ravan and Dara Singh played Hanuman’s role. Dipika and Arun Govil spoke about how the show was the best thing to have happened to them, but it stalled their careers. The actors worked in films post the show, but did not receive the same success.
