Many religions have prophecies or beliefs about the end of the world, often portraying it as a cataclysmic event or a transformative period. Meanwhile, natural calamities are undeniably scaring, often striking without warning and causing widespread destruction and devastation. As per the news agency ANI report, Japan dispatched an expert assessment team to Myanmar following the devastating earthquake that struck the country on Friday, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale. Videos and photos went viral all over the social media platform. Just as the world is beginning to recover from the devastation of the Myanmar-Thailand earthquake, Japan has issued a new warning. According to a report from Japan’s government agency, a megaquake — a massive earthquake — could strike, potentially claiming the lives of over 300000 people in a single moment. This event could trigger a tsunami and cause widespread destruction in many countries.
As per a news report by News18 Hindi, the Japanese government released a warning recently about a long-awaited megaquake that could strike the country’s Pacific coast, bringing with it a devastating tsunami. This will be so destructive that many buildings could be destroyed in the event. Last year, Japan issued its first warning about a megaquake, forecasting the possibility of a 9.0 magnitude earthquake following a 7.1 magnitude quake along the trench, reported News18 Hindi. If this occurs, Japan’s economy could face losses in the trillions of dollars, essentially wiping out half of the country’s GDP. As a result, preparations to manage the disaster have already been accelerated.
The report further stated that if a 9.0 magnitude earthquake strikes, around 1.3 million people may need to be evacuated, which represents 10% of Japan’s total population. If the earthquake occurs late at night during the winter, the resulting tsunami and building collapses could cause the loss of up to 298,000 lives, reported News1i8 Hindi. Japan is located in one of the world’s most hazardous zones, with an 80% likelihood of experiencing earthquakes of magnitudes 8 to 9 in its maritime regions.
The trench extends approximately 900 km (600 miles) from Japan’s southwestern Pacific coast, where the Philippine Sea Plate is subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate. Due to the buildup of tectonic stress, a megaquake is likely to occur every 100 to 150 years. In 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake caused a catastrophic tsunami and led to the meltdown of three reactors at a nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan, resulting in over 15,000 deaths.
