On June 27, 2016, Princess Trishika Kumari Devi, the princess of Dungarpur was married to King Yaduveer Wadiyar in a much-hyped royal wedding, and a year later, the young Queen gave birth to a healthy baby boy, thus ending the Mysore royal family’s so-called ‘curse’ after four centuries.

The Wadiyar dynasty of Mysore is one of the richest royal families in India, with the current royal scion, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, the titular ruler of Mysore, having a property estimated to be worth a staggering Rs 80,000 crore. But did you know that Wadiyar dynasty was plagued by a ‘curse’ for over 400 years?
The ‘curse’ of Mysore royal family
According to legend, when the powerful Vijayanagara Empire fell in 1612 AD, the kingdom was pillaged and all its wealth looted on the orders of the Wadiyar king, and even the personal riches and precious jewelry of Queen Alamelamma, the wife of King Tirumalaraja, was not spared.
On the orders of the Wadiyar king, his soldiers pursued Queen Alamelamma, but the brave queen refused and fled. Ultimately, she reached a dead end and died by suicide by jumping into the Cauvery river. But before her death, she placed a curse upon the Wadiyar king, that his dynasty will always remain childless and will be destroyed, just like hers was snuffed out.
“May the land at Talakadu would be barren, May the river at Malangi turn into a whirlpool and may the Mysore kings never beget children,” the Queen shouted before jumping into the river.
Following Queen Alamelamma’s death, all male heirs of the Wadiyar dynasty died under mysterious conditions. The Wadiyar king even deified Alamelamma, and began worshipping her as a goddess, in order to get rid of the curse, but all his efforts proved futile as the dynasty remained without a male heir.
Princess Trishika broke the curse after 400 years
On June 27, 2016, Princess Trishika Kumari Devi, the princess of Dungarpur was married to King Yaduveer Wadiyar in a much-hyped royal wedding, and a year later, the young Queen gave birth to a healthy baby boy, thus ending the Mysore royal family’s so-called ‘curse’ after four centuries.
Before Queen Trishika gave birth to a baby prince, the Wadiyar royals had been adopting sons from their extended family to further the royal line, this includes King Yaduveer Wadiyar, the 27th titular king of Mysore, who was also adopted.
Wadiyar dynasty net worth
According to various media reports, King Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar owns property worth Rs 80,000 crore, but despite the enormous wealth, Queen Trishika Kumari Wadiyar prefers to live a simple life and dresses in a modest manner.
In pictures and videos shared on her Instagram page, Queen Trishika can often be seen her spending time with her family and performing royal duties. The Queen is often seen draped in classy sarees, pairing them with minimal jewelry, never flaunting her riches.
Queen Trishika Kumari Wadiyar is now a proud mother of two baby princes, after giving birth to a second child, thus ending the 400-year-old curse that had plagued the Mysore royal family.
