For many in Dubai, fasting is not just a religious ritual, but a symbol of unity and harmony.

Many Indian Hindus have been observing fast during Ramadan in Dubai for the past 32 years. Just like the Muslims, they observe fast without sehri and break fast with dates, fruits and vegetarian food.
Their fast is a little different from others because they do not do Sehri. That is, they keep fast from morning till evening without eating or drinking anything. They break the fast only with dates, fruits and vegetarian food. Usually they do not eat non-vegetarian food, although sometimes they consume fish. After breaking the fast, they eat light food at 10 pm and then go to sleep.
The Hindus there believe that fasting is not only a symbol of discipline, but it also increases self-restraint and social understanding. According to a Hindu resident , “If people start understanding each other’s religion and sentiments, then unity and harmony can remain in the society.” He says that Ramadan is not just a month of fasting for him, but a part of a spiritual journey.
