One such location is the Bala Fort, a historical Mughal-era fort in Alwar, Rajasthan. According to legend, the Bala Fort houses the treasure of Kubera, the Hindu god of wealth.

The unconquered fort
Situated on the picturesque Aravalli hills in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, Bala Fort was built by Hasan Khan Mewati in 1492. Equipped with several watchtowers, and giant holes in walls for accommodating large cannons, the structure was designed as an impenetrable fortress, and according to legend, has never been conquered, earning it the moniker ‘Kunwara Kila’ or ‘Virgin fort’.
The fort is situated at a height of about 300 metres (960 ft) on the Aravalli Hills, offering a beautiful view of the city below.
While Hasan Khan Mewati began the fort’s construction in the late 15th century, it remained under various rulers over the years, who added several structures and enhanced its defenses. According to historians, Mughal emperor Babur, and his descendants, including Jahangir, are said to have stayed in Fort Bala.
Famous structures inside Bala fort
The Bala fort has six major entrance gates: Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Krishna Pol and Andheri Pol. There are a total of 446 gun holes in the walls of the fort, where guns were mounted to fire at enemies who tried to conquer the fortress.
The historic fort has a perimeter of about about 8 kilometers, comprising numerous palaces, temples and other structures. It is divided into several sections with multiple staircases connecting different areas.
Some of fort’s iconic structures include Suraj Kund (sun pond), Suleman Sagar (Suleman lake), Jal Mahal (water palace), Nikumbh Mahal Palace, and Saliem Mahal, where Mughal emperor Jahangir had stayed.
Additionally, the Bala fort is famous for its intricate carvings and temples.
