Vicky Kaushal lives the title role and gives his cent per cent to it. He looks the warrior and literally breathes fire into the action and stunt scenes. Rashmika Mandana looks like an ethereal beauty. On the whole, Chhaava is a box-office winner. It will do extraordinary business in Bombay and Maharashtra. Business in other circuits will be fair.

The granules of history elude the film, and so do the finer points of the cinematic art of assembling barely remembered anecdotes for mass consumption. If it isn’t a complete washout, it is solely because of the two main actors.

At the end of 161 minutes of Chhaava, based on the high-points of the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Shivaji Maharaj, you are left with two chief thoughts. How do you pull off a film which talks up a historical figure not as well known as his illustrious parent, without us wondering: how much is fact, and how much fiction.

Chhaava’s excellence lies in its terrific climax, one of the finest in Bollywood historical epics. Vicky Kaushal is breathtaking as he exudes Sambhaji Maharaj’s valour and passion for swaraj like it were his second skin. You just wish the film relied and trusted its solid story more than Rahman’s music, which largely feels out of place.

Overall, the film, produced by Dinesh Vijan under the banner of Maddock Films, has managed to capture the essence of who Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was and why people across the world need to know of his legacy.

The climax is one of the most disturbing and violent endings you will see on the big screen. If you have watched Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, it’s that level of brutality and torture. The intent is to showcase the extent of his allegiance to his people and land, but the visuals are not for the faint-hearted.

On the whole, Chhaava is a cinematic experience, which should be witnessed on the big screen for star performances and above all to know about the great life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

The climax dazzles with its narrative intensity and stunning visuals. While Utekar’s storytelling could have been tighter, his attempt is commendable. Most notably, Chhaava unveils a fierce, unrelenting Vicky Kaushal in a historical saga
